Vocalise Africa uses Creative Arts such as radio drama, community theatre, audio-visual podcasts and inteactive radio conversations to communicate important social issues affecting communities on a day to day basis. Recognising that conventional campaigns may not always resonate with underserved groups, the organisation uses creative arts to transform complex issues into culturally relevant and engaging stories with impact.
A key feature of this approach is that communities are not merely viewed as audiences but rather as active participants in the communication process. Community members contribute their indigenous knowledge and perspectives in finding solutions to issues affecting them by engaging through radio listening groups, drama listening clubs, community podcast dialogues, radio call-in sessions and other accessible audience feedback mechanisms.
As such, communities are able to engage on important issues such as gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health, refugee rights, mental health, youth empowerment, peace-building, climate change and anticipatory action, among many others. By combining entertainment with education, Creative Arts become a safe space for addressing sensitive subjects in ways that are culturally relatable.
Additionally, Vocalise Africa prioritises the use of local languages, local talent and trusted community voices to strengthen ownership and sustainability. Through this approach, creativity becomes not only an entertainment platform, but also a viable tool for promoting social behaviour change, community learning and dialogue.
When communities see themselves in the stories, hear their own languages and voices, and have opportunities to participate in the conversation, they are more likely to engage with the issues, retain information, and collectively identify solutions to the challenges they face.
